We took turns firing cannonballs (okay, marbles . . . ).

Our classroom has turned blue and gray, as students immersed themselves in the Civil War! In addition to research, reading, and writing, students created their own 'amphibian' reenactment, using origami frogs from Leap Day. Below: the Battle of Bull(frog) Run! We also immersed ourselves in Scholastic's 5-day Civil War simulation activity. Photos below include students participating in the simulation, as well as stick figures and journal entries the students made. Finally, we visited Chancellorsville! Thanks, Ranger Pete, for walking that "hallowed ground" with us. Thanks to a parent volunteer, we enjoyed some sweet pi activities! Students studied the photograph below, and listed all the 'pi' words they could find (hint: homophones are included)! Our winner got to wear 'pi' for the day! We enjoyed some special homemade treats, including 'pi' cake and grasshopper pie! We went sugar crazy, whoop whoop whoop!!
(It's okay now and again . . . ) Students 'decomposed' a ruler using measurement and equivalent fractions. Follow-up work included word problems and games, see below --
Students read a choice biography, conducted research, then summarized their learning with writing and a photo-shopped image of themselves and their character. Look for your child cheering on Olympic runner Wilma Rudolph, or hanging out with Einstein . . . |
